Bolivia, The Unforgettable Destination: Lago Titicaca & Salar de Uyuni Travel Experience
By Xavier Hawley | Journeys by Yvonne
Bolivia doesn’t gently introduce itself—it overwhelms you in the best possible way. From sky-high cities to mirror-like salt flats that blur the line between earth and sky, this journey became one of the most extraordinary travel experiences we’ve ever had.
Arrival into the Andes (La Paz, Bolivia)
Our journey began in Austin, Texas, connecting through Bogotá before descending into the dramatic altitude of La Paz. Nestled deep within a canyon and surrounded by the Andes, La Paz feels like a city suspended between earth and sky.
Even before the adventure truly began, the landscape hinted at what was to come—raw, vast, and humbling.
Lake Titicaca & Isla del Sol Experience
The following morning, we set out toward Lake Titicaca, the highest navigable lake in the world. Our first stop was Copacabana, home to the revered Basilica of Our Lady of Copacabana—a spiritual center where locals believe miracles still occur.
From there, we boarded a hydrofoil across the deep blue waters to Isla del Sol. Hiking to the top of the island rewarded us with breathtaking views and a profound sense of history among ancient Incan ruins.
That night, we stayed at the serene Posada del Inca Ecolodge—a peaceful retreat that felt worlds away from everything.
The next day brought one of the most fascinating cultural experiences: visiting the floating islands, ingeniously built by local communities using reeds that grow in the lake. Even today, dozens of villages continue to live this way, preserving traditions that feel almost timeless.
La Paz Luxury Stay & Mi Teleférico Experience
We returned to La Paz for a night at Casa Grande Hotel, a comfortable base before the most surreal part of our journey.
The city itself is an experience—especially its cable car system, Mi Teleférico, recognized as the largest urban gondola network in the world. Floating above the city offers unmatched panoramic views.
Salar de Uyuni: The Ultimate Bolivia Salt Flats Experience
Then came the highlight: a flight south toward the legendary Salar de Uyuni—a salt desert so vast it defies comprehension. Larger than many countries’ lakes and stretching endlessly, it’s a place where perspective disappears.
Driving hours into the flats, we stopped for lunch in the middle of absolute nothingness. The thin layer of water over the salt created a mirror so perfect it felt like walking through the sky—like being on the moon, Mars, or some entirely different planet.
That evening, we checked into Palacio de Sal, an architectural marvel constructed entirely from salt—walls, furniture, even the smallest details. After a day of exploration, its spa and saline baths were the perfect way to unwind.
As the sun dipped below the horizon, our tour operator prepared an unforgettable experience: cocktails and dinner set right in the middle of the flats. Watching the sunset reflect infinitely in every direction is something words can hardly capture.
Uyuni Islands, Volcanoes & Luxury Camping Under the Stars
The adventure continued with a visit to one of the islands rising from the salt flats—most notably Incahuasi Island—home to towering cacti, some reaching over 12 feet tall.
That night, we stayed at a luxury campsite at the base of a volcano with striking multicolored sands. Six beautifully updated Airstream campers circled a warm fire pit.
With no artificial light for miles, the night sky exploded with stars—more than we had ever seen. Dinner on the flats, another spectacular sunset, and the silence of the high desert made for a truly unforgettable evening.
Fine Dining in La Paz: Arami Restaurant Experience
Our final evening in La Paz delivered a culinary experience as unforgettable as the journey itself. We gathered for a farewell dinner at Arami Restaurant, a rising star in the city’s dining scene led by one of Bolivia’s most promising young chefs.
The concept was bold and beautifully executed—an homage to the Amazon, brought to life through inventive dishes and locally inspired cocktails crafted exclusively for our group. Each course told a story of Bolivia’s biodiversity, with flavors that were both surprising and deeply rooted in tradition.
The menu featured delicacies such as alligator, paired with aromatic herbs and native ingredients. The highlight of the evening—the true conversation piece—was the dish of the night: piranha. Prepared with remarkable finesse, it defied expectations entirely. The flavor was delicate, refined, and simply unforgettable.
Accompanied by handcrafted cocktails using local fruits and botanicals, the evening became more than just a meal—it was a celebration of Bolivia’s rich culinary identity.
Why Bolivia Should Be Your Next Luxury Destination
Bolivia leaves you with more than memories—it leaves you with perspective. From its sacred landscapes to its bold culinary identity, every moment feels deeply authentic and untouched.
As our journey came to a close, one thing was certain: this is not a destination you simply visit—it’s one you carry with you long after you leave.
